This is applicable for people with mild to moderate color blindness. This was announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Color-blind people can now drive with new amendment to CMVRAn amendment has been made in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, which will now allow color-blind people also to drive vehicles.
The recommendations received were to allow mild to medium color-blind citizens to be allowed to drive and put restrictions only on the severe color-blind citizens from driving. The issue was taken up with medical expert institution and advice was sought. The notification issued by the Ministry states the following, ‘'The ministry received representations that the color blind citizens are not able to have the driving licence made as restrictions through the requirements in the declaration about physical fitness (FORM 1) or the medical certificate (FORM 1A) makes it difficult. The new amendment in the rules has been taken after due consideration with ophthalmologists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and other medical experts. Missing them because of color blindness would make drivers more susceptible to accidents. This is because color is an integral part of safety signs, traffic signals, and other road signs.
